Independent technical services · Austin, Texas
Ingenuity by divergence.
Clinamen is a small firm of senior technical gurus who design, build and maintain the data & cloud systems that organizations come to depend on; mostly on GCP, across a wider spread of domains than other firms our size would have any business claiming, and always with the same people at the table from the first conversation to the last.
We are like the special forces of professional services. Focusing on a perpetually small team by design earns us agility, the ability to work with only the best of the best, and the opportunity to focus on what matters most: You.
With minimal overhead our prices are beyond competitive, our engagement with you is always direct, and our work can speak for itself.
What we do
People come to us in one of three states.
You know what you need, and it does not exist yet.
We design it with you and write it down first, as a spec a stranger could build from: the screens, the API, the architecture, the plan. Once we're all aligned, we build it ourselves; the same people from the first sketch to the last deploy.
You have something that exists, and it needs work.
A migration off whatever came before; a pipeline that grew by accretion; a database older than some of the people maintaining it; a system nobody is quite sure how to change safely. We are comfortable in other people's code, and we do not insist on (though we are open to) starting over.
You have data, a hunch, and no brief.
Projects that start like this are always a blast, so it's become our favorite way to begin. Bring the data and the hunch; the brief is what the first workshop is for.
Whichever of the three you are, every engagement of ours opens with a design & discovery workshop, on site if you like, in which you show us what you have, we tell you what could be done with it, and everyone leaves knowing what happens next.

How we work
A flat firm of senior generalists, small on purpose.
Clinamen is a flat firm that intends to stay small, and that is the whole of the design rather than a stage on the way to something larger. Everybody here is a senior practitioner of the autodidactic sort, the kind who came up wearing every hat a project could hand them & rather enjoyed it. While we do have project managers, the rest of any given team is composed entirely of equally capable industry veterans who collaborate with one another and build it all themselves rather than delegating to a team of juniors. No executives, middle managers, or sales people who don't live and breathe the day-to-day work means full accountability without corporate politics or predatory sales practices entering the picture. The person you meet in the first conversation draws the architecture, writes the code, runs the migration and answers the phone afterwards; where the work outruns one pair of hands, the others cover the gap, because none of us are specialized into a single role.
That arrangement has consequences you can measure. With almost nobody on the payroll who is not delivering, our overhead is low and our prices follow it. With no handoffs between whoever sold the work, whoever delivers it and whoever supports it, we move at the pace of the people actually doing the work, which is to say quickly. And because your relationship is with the people building your system rather than with an account manager standing in front of them, it tends to be a real one; the accounts we have kept longest are the ones where that was true.
Where a larger firm would put a bench of junior staff, we put ourselves; the work is done by the best and brightest, without compromise.
It is, we will admit, a rather good time to be small.
On the name
Clinamen, the swerve.
declinamus item motus nec tempore certo nec regione loci certa, sed ubi ipsa tulit mens.
We too swerve in our motions, at no fixed time and no fixed place, but where the mind itself has carried us.
Lucretius, De Rerum Natura II.259–260
Clinamen is Lucretius's word for the swerve: the small, unpredictable deviation that lets atoms collide into something new instead of falling forever in a straight, deterministic line. He needed it for a reason that had little to do with physics. Without the swerve there is no free will, only a chain of causes running back to the beginning of things; with it, a mind can move itself, at no fixed time and no fixed place, but where it wills.
That is more or less our entire theory of the business. Value comes from the people who don't fall neatly into a lane, who deviate productively, who see the whole board rather than one square of it, and who value autonomy over direction. Such people are, we will happily admit, a little weird; they are not what most people picture when they hear the word engineer, because they are not only engineers. The clients who find us tend to appreciate the same thing. What binds the lot of us together is the habit of exercising a bit of free will where the normal order of operations does not fit, and that habit is what makes all the difference.
Working here
We're hiring for the swerve, not the straight line.
We are looking for senior generalists: autodidacts with real professional mileage who are genuinely un-bothered by not knowing something yet, because they know they'll learn it. You are not defined by a stack. You've picked up whatever the work required, more than once, and you enjoyed it. You can go into the weeds to design and build a solution, and then come up for air to sit across the table from a client and explain it in plain English.
In the spirit of not wasting anyone's time: this is a poor fit for someone who wants a single narrow specialty and a tidy ticket queue, who prefers a large org to be one cog within, or who disengages the moment the work drifts outside their comfort zone. If that is not you, and the rest of this page reads like somewhere you would rather be, write to us.
